Fontechiara

Piedmonte, Italy

Passion and quality come together from this tiny family producer crafting small about of nebbiolo in the foothills of the alps.

Nestled in the foothills of the Alps near Lago Maggiore and Lago d’Orta, the Fontechiara vineyards are planted in lightly acid terrain at 350 meters above sea level. Years ago the Celtics and Romans in the region were some of the first to cultivate vineyards and harvested in late autumn with the first fog. They called this wine “Nebbiolo” from the Italian word “nebbia” for fog. Alternate explanations associate Nebbiolo with the Italian word nobile meaning noble. Today, harvest takes place in late October when a deep intense fog sets into the region where many Nebbiolo vineyards are located.
