Alana Estate was established in 1993 by a grou of shareholders headed by Ian and Alana Smart. Encompassing 55 acres of land, 42 acres of which are in planted vines and located on the northern edge of the Martinborough Terrace, this estate is believed to be the driest location in Martinborough.
Martinborough is situated on the hold Huangaura river bed which ran through this area some 7000 years ago. Deposited mudstone, quartz and feldspart created argillitic greywacke rocks, mixed in with silt, sand and volcanic ash. The resultant deep stony soil provides excellent drainage and complex clay and mineral components that significantly impact the wine style.
