Fariña is the pioneer of Toro and the brand is synonymous with the region all over the world.

Fariña has always been the fearless promoter of the region and was the initial driving force behind modernisation being the first to do almost everything; the first to bring forward the harvest to September to reduce alcohol levels from 17% to 13% – 13.5% (the rest of the region followed him); the first winery to install fermentation temperature controls in stainless steel fermentation tanks and de-stemmers; the first to understand the importance of balance and elegance in wines to be able to sell them; the first winery to export their wines; the first winery to understand how to sell bottled wine with a brand; the first to encourage Vega Sicilia to invest in Toro by giving them their first 2 hectares and the list is set to continue into the future as Bernardo Fariña, the third generation takes over….

Manuel Fariña has long been considered the founding father of TORO and the brand Fariña is synonymous with the region TORO all over the world. This has been reflected recently by the town of TORO awarding Manolo an honory citizenship in a prestigious awards ceremony on the 31st August 2006.

Born on the 21 December 1941 in Casaseca de las Chanas, Zamora, Manolo Fariña inherited the winery from his father, Salvador Fariña. He grew up around the vineyards and winery and was predestined to follow in his father’s footsteps. Following his winemaking studies in Requena, Valencia, and Bordeaux he returned to the family business where he took overall charge in 1969 and converted the jug wine business into serious quality driven, Bordeaux influenced, brand focused bottled wines. His unwavering belief in the region of Toro and its varietal “TINTA DE TORO” has been remarkable since day one. When no one believed in TORO, he stood almost alone to convert the region to a D.O. which he finally achieved in 1985. He became the first president of the D.O TORO regulating body which thrives on today.
