Ribera del Duero, Spain

Tomás Esteban, winemaker and bodega owner, is well-known for his work as one of the pioneers in replanting Tinat del Pais {Tempranillo] throughout Rivera in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He is one of the few growers in the region who works with the old-style bush-trained vines.

Today, Tomás Esteban cultivates, with his two sons, Juan and Ricardo, seventy-five hectares (approximately 185 acres) of vines, divided into thirty different parcels throughout the Roa region of the Ribera del Duero. The family was one of the first to take up ecological agriculture in the Ribera del Duero.

The complete absence of herbicides, pesticides and mineral fertilizers is their hallmark. This type of cultivation has enabled them to achieve a well- balanced plant and a residue free soil, resulting in a fruit of exceptional quality. Since the year 2000, a small area of land has been cultivated using biodynamic practices. Attention to detail has allowed the Esteban family to get the best out of these austere, exceptional vines. The end result is their wine, a faithful reflection of Roa and of the Ribera del Duero.
